Dawit ----------- Minutes of the meeting of the sub-committee for the preparation of the workshop that creates the Computer Standards Association for Ethiopia, held on July 25th, 1997 Were present : Asteraye Tsegie Berhanu Beyene Dawit Bekele Fikre Yibrehu Nega Alemayehu Agenda - Advertisement for the workshop - Identifying people for the leadership of the association - Preparation of the workshop event itself - Matters arising It has been expressed that it is important to invite, at the creation of the association, all individuals and associations that can be interested in Computer Standards so that the association that will be formed have better acceptability. The group has identified the following people and associations: - All people present at the July 15/16 IT conference - Padis and ETC E-mail subscribers - Linguists from the AAU, external institutions (England, Florence, Louvain, etc.), the church - Writers association - Publishers - Journalists association - Known figures (some reservations exist on that) - Teaching Materials Producer at the Ministry of Education - The Ministry of Education - ESTC - AAU (Math Dept., SISA, etc.) - Information Technology Society and all other professional societies - Chamber of commerce - Institute of Ethiopian Studies - Library and Information Association (Represented by Ato Degefe at IES library) - Interested groups from outside Ethiopia : ESS, EthCITA, individuals (Joseph Becker, etc.) The group has expressed the need for identifying the people that can have positive contribution in the association as Board members, Executive committee and sub-committee members. However, it has been difficult to identify people without being sure of the roles of the board and the committees and the number of individuals needed for. The group has preferred to discuss, for the time being, on the institutions that should be represented in the board, without naming individuals. The following institutions have been identified so that they are considered by the Charter Sub-committee of the steering committee : - Chamber of commerce - ESTC - AAU (Mathematics dept. and Linguistics) In addition, it has been pointed out that the board should be composed exclusively of Ethiopians since it is a problem of national concern. The group has also discussed about the organization of the workshop. First of all, it has agreed on a tentative schedule for the 23rd August in the afternoon. The group has assigned to Ato Nega the task of investigating the possibilities of holding the workshop at the graduate school's conference hall. Other possibilities are Christmas Hall, Amphitheaters in Arat Kilo or Sidist Kilo campuses, and the conference hall of the EAS. The group agreed that the workshop should have the following agenda : - Keynote speech by a well known professional summarizing the needs of computer standards - Steering committee's report - Discussion and adoption of the association - Elections of the board members and the executive committee It has been agreed that we will need funding for the following items : - Coffee and biscuits during the workshop - Advertisement - Photocopying of the charter - Secretarial service The following sources have been identified for further study: - ECA (for Photocopying) - Chamber of commerce (Dawit should talk to the Chamber of commerce) - EAS The meeting is adjourned at 1 PM and the next meeting is scheduled for August 1st, at 10 AM at the Mathematics Department.
